Diggers Hotline is Wisconsin's one-call center. Anyone in the state who is digging, excavating, or disturbing the soil in any way is required by law to contact Diggers Hotline at least three business days before beginning work.
As a homeowner you probably have the need to dig in the yard periodically to build a new patio, install a fence, plant trees or shrubs, or install an irrigation system. Before you being digging you should make contacting Diggers Hotline your number one priority.
Contacting Diggers Hotline is simple and available 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. You can call Diggers Hotline at 811 or 800.242.8511. You can also file a request for a locate on their website. After submitting your locate request with Diggers Hotline the underground lines in the area you requested to be marked for your project will be marked by utility owners with colored paint and flags (Color Code). The flags and colored paint marks will let you know approximately where the lines are buried and will help you to avoid hitting them while digging. When possible, it is best to dig at least 18 inches away from the marks. However, if it is necessary to dig closer, you will need to proceed carefully using only hand tools within 18 inches of either side of the marks.
